It takes a certain talent to create a truly comfortable and inviting family home from the ground up.
Designer Cindy Lloyd’s clients had been frequenting their small river house in Tappahannock since their children were young. However, as the children grew up and started families of their own, the need for a larger, more versatile space became apparent. They also considered the possibility of using the new home as a short-term rental.
The new house in Northumberland County was built with four bedrooms in the main structure with access to two efficiency studios, one upstairs and one downstairs, intended to accommodate friends and family.
Lloyd had worked for the couple before, so when they reached out last April, she was already familiar with their lifestyle and taste. “They entrusted me to completely furnish the house and provide comfortable living spaces with an inviting feel,” Lloyd says. “Their only decorating request was for the home to reflect the beauty of the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay.”
Considering the house was intended for family getaways, Lloyd had to ensure the rugs and fabrics were forgiving. To maintain a simple yet versatile decor, she set out to create a space that could cater to the husband’s fishing buddies, a girls’ weekend at the river, or a family gathering. Each bedroom was designed with its own unique personality, making it distinctly different.
Once she began adding artwork and soft furnishings, the husband, who’d wanted things kept simple, admitted he liked the effect of additional items. “Early on in the process, they decided against using the house as a rental,” Lloyd says. “As I decorated the space and filled the rooms with their style, the more it became a family home.”
The final result was perfect but not perfect, exactly what she’d hoped to achieve. “The house may look magazine-worthy, but it’s the kind of place where friends and family can come in and kick their shoes off,” Lloyd says. “My greatest satisfaction was that they truly trusted my design instincts and the results made for a home they immediately chose to keep for themselves.”
