The sense of place is strong at Panorama. Standing at the double doors of the house’s center hall, one has a sweeping view of Chandler’s Mill Pond, a scenic 75-acre lake, and a vast contiguous panorama of ancient woodland, open fields and fenced pastures. Perched on a high promontory, this Georgian Revival all-brick manor house was designed by renowned architect Joseph Evans Sperry. This magnificent home was constructed in 1932, during the Country Place era in Virginia when houses were being built as they had been in ages past, as attested to by the elegant grand staircase that greets visitors upon arrival. An extensive and historically sensitive restoration has returned Panorama to pristine condition, right down to the interior mechanisms of the original door locks and hardware being repaired to make them once again fully functional. Adding to the overall sense of the historic legacy are the original moldings, including: built-in china closets, raised paneling, walnut stair railings, fireplace mantels, heart pine floors and columns on the gracious water-side porch, which date to the original construction. Landscape Architect H. Clay Primrose’s original terraced gardens have also been restored. As Panorama is also a working horse farm, a large portion of the property was recently fenced and cross-fenced.
Situated in Westmoreland County, the house offers solace and quiet with a high quality of life for those searching for a primary or second home to escape urban life. “Montross is such a lovely little town, charming and friendly, with wonderful restaurants, a brewery and community amenities,” says Realtor Karin Andrews. “Nearby Ingleside Winery produces award-winning wines and Denson’s Chesapeake Bay Farm to Table is a past winner for best seafood restaurant in Virginia Living magazine.” The manor house has six bedrooms, five updated bathrooms and nine fireplaces. Windows have been upgraded with wood thermal pane reproductions of the original windows, vinyl-clad on the exterior for durability, geothermal heating and cooling, high ceilings and a world-class chef’s kitchen. The property also boasts a spacious two-story guest house which overlooks the idyllic landscape, a new world-class equestrian facility with 17-plus stalls and Panorama’s original barn, especially picturesque with its Dutch gambrel roof and fenced pastures. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has been designated a Virginia Historic Landmark. “Surrounded by a bucolic, pastoral landscape, Panorama is that rare property that provides a true sense of belonging,” Andrews says.
