It’s not every day that Prestige Cabinets gets asked to do a full kitchen renovation on a 17th-century house. The Cumberland Plantation in New Kent County has deep colonial roots, but the client’s vision was to create a modern kitchen capable of catering events for over 100 guests, while also maintaining the property’s historical look.
From the start, the project was a collaboration between the client, the project architect and the Prestige Cabinets team. Any renovation project presents obstacles because it means dealing with a space constructed by someone else some time ago and what’s behind the walls is unknown. “In a project like this that dates back so many years, those challenges are even more compounded,” explains Doug Hogue, owner, with his wife Terrah, of Prestige Cabinets. “Different materials and different methods of construction were used, so there were many interesting moments to overcome.”
The team was key and they often had to bounce ideas off one another to problem- solve. Other times, it came down to trial and error. “Either way, we pressed forward with the main goal not to sacrifice the project’s quality by making quick, uneducated decisions,” he says. “We just aren’t of that mindset to take short-cuts or make sacrifices to the project.” In the end, the Prestige Cabinets team achieved what they set out to do by creating a spectacular new kitchen space equipped to cater events of 100 or more people, yet it looked like part of the fabric of the 17th-century plantation.
Hogue attributes that success to the company’s mission of making clients the top priority so that each project reflects their personalities, interests and desires. “In order to achieve that result, we engage them and listen to their likes and dislikes, then implement them, making sure no sacrifices are made to achieve the end goal,” he says. Although it may sound clichéd and simple, it isn’t. “It takes a lot of work. We’ll always strive to overcome whatever obstacles are placed in front of us to ensure the client receives the end results they hired us to help them achieve.”
