Having dinner at the Blue Talon on Prince Street is one of Sophie’s favorite “My Perfect Day” activities.

Sophie’s parents, Catherine and Paul Freiling, are pictured with their engaging daughter.
Sophie Freiling is… a 15-year-old teenager who grew up in Williamsburg, works at Baskin Robbins and is on the golf team at Lafayette High School. She also volunteers at Colonial Williamsburg as a Junior Interpreter…. You may know her dad, he’s Williamsburg’s mayor, Paul Freiling.
Run the Trails
Even though Sophie had trouble narrowing down her favorite things to do in Williamsburg, she was able to consider a perfect holiday day in Williamsburg.
“My ideal day would start with an easy jog through Redoubt Park, enjoying the peaceful nature of the serene setting and appreciating the important history of the area,” she said. “Then, I would head downtown to Aromas for an energizing breakfast and a refreshing fruit smoothie.”
Festive Cheer
Since it’s a “perfect day” it would just happen to be the first Saturday in December, when it’s our community’s beloved Christmas Parade. She’d grab a spot on Richmond Road to watch.
“I think the parade sets the tone for the rest of the holiday season, with the colorful floats full of people and marching troupes spreading cheer. When the parade comes to a close, I would meet up with some of my friends to go ice skating at Liberty’s Ice Pavilion. The fresh winter air as we race around the rink creates an exhilarating thrill.”
Sweet & Treats
With two forms of exercise already under her belt, she’s headed to The Cheese Shop to pick up a roast beef sandwich to enjoy in the Sunken Gardens.
Then it’s time for some relaxation. “I’d throw the football with my dad, and watch all of the students hustling around campus preparing for exams. If we got cold, we could go to Mad about Chocolate to get an amazing chocolate treat.”
With the end of the day looming, Sophie would travel to Merchants Square to watch A Christmas Carol performed by the talented actors of the Virginia Theatre Machine.
“No matter how many times I have seen the performance, it continues to entertain,” she said. Sophie would continue down Duke of Gloucester Street to see all of the impressive custom-made Christmas decorations.
“I might stop at the Raleigh Tavern Bakery to get a ginger cake and a cup of hot apple cider. To end the day, I would go to dinner at the Blue Talon for my favorite: steak frites,” she said.
After all that walking and eating… she’d hop on the Williamsburg Trolley and go to High Street. This perfect day has to include finding holiday gifts! Sophie said she’d go to Paint on Pottery to create a special Christmas present for her sister.
“All these activities would create my ideal day in Williamsburg, but the best part of the day would be spending time with my family in such a beautiful place,” said Sophie.
