Chesapeake Academy (CA) describes its educational program as “Small School. Huge Classroom!” When it comes to community involvement, the slogan could easily be “Small School. Huge Impact!”
Founded half a century ago, the independent day school in Irvington features an intellectually challenging environment that academically, ethically, socially, and physically prepares students from age three through grade eight for life’s future challenges. Today a diverse group of youngsters enjoy hands-on, project-based learning that gets them beyond the campus to explore their community and the world. It’s no surprise that Virginia Living magazine recognized CA as the best independent school in southeast Virginia.
CA is actively engaged with the local community. “Giving back is a big part of our students’ responsibility,” says Deborah Cook, head of school. “We want them to understand that each person can make a difference.”
Last year CA students participated in “Socktober” to support The Haven, gleaned fields, raised funds for the Northern Neck Food Bank, collected gently used children’s books for the Northern Neck Free Health Clinic, decorated trees for the YMCA’s Festival of the Trees, provided technological support for a local senior residence, purchased and wrapped Christmas gifts for children, and raised funds for cancer research.
The Seth W. Ahlborn “Performing Arts and Lectures Series” brings 400 children from area public and independent schools, preschools, and daycare centers to the CA campus to enjoy nine annual theater performances.
For fifty years, CA has been a good neighbor, reaching out to help and support wherever there’s a need, enriching everyone’s life.
