Bay Aging’s Meals on Wheels Program Provides for Anyone Who Needs Food
Meals on Wheels’ popularity has only increased since the pandemic. Besides delivering more than 185,000 meals a year, they also offer a smiling face and eyes to notice when a resident doesn’t answer the door. “We don’t have waiting lists for Meals on Wheels,” Vesley says. “Private funds allow us to provide for anyone who needs food.”
Bay Aging contracts with the school cafeteria in Mathews to prepare fresh meals for Meals on Wheels clients in Mathews County, while clients in other counties receive frozen meals that meet nutritional guidelines.
That will change with the recent addition of a commercial kitchen to Bay Aging’s Montross Care Coordination Office, which oversees Meals on Wheels for the 10 counties. The new kitchen will allow some Westmoreland County clients to receive fresh, hot meals, with the potential for expansion in the Northern Neck.
And Meals on Wheels isn’t just for people with financial issues. Some clients receive meals for a short time to meet a specific need, such as after surgery or an injury that hinders their ability to prepare food. Other clients voluntarily pay for their Meals on Wheels via donations to Bay Aging.
