To celebrate and support the local art community, Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center is unveiling Nine Women, Nine Months – a new art display that features paintings by nine local female artists. Each artist selected a topic that relates to the female life journey, which include:
- Caregivers by Apryl Altman
- Devotion by Sharon Parker
- Healing by Lori Jakubow
- Motherhood by Caroline Garrett Hardy
- Patterns by Jenny Loveland
- Perseverance by Ginny Fisher
- Sustenance by Sue Danehy
- Transformation by Laurie Rokutani
Each woman divided a 24” by 36” canvas into nine sections and began the painting with her interpretation of the topic in one of the sections. They then passed each canvas and topic to the other artists in the program, resulting in nine canvases, each with nine sections, painted by the artists.
The artists hope that the works translate and speak to patients in the hospital that may be experiencing health adversity to help them in their emotional recovery and wellbeing.
“This project is a tremendous reflection of local female artists in Williamsburg” said Robert Leek, Senior Physician Liaison, Sentara Healthcare. “We are thrilled to provide these local artists a platform and the community easy access to observe and enjoy their works. We invite all of our community members to visit the installation.”
art will be featured in the hospital’s lobby beginning January 25, 2017. Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center has been featuring the works of local artists in the lobby’s Visiting Artist Gallery since 2006, when the new hospital opened. Select pieces of the collection will be for sale and the artists will donate 100 percent of the sales to the hospital’s auxiliary program that provides free mammography services for the community – on average 25 free screenings a month.
