Coldwell Banker Chesapeake Bay Properties
Payne’s Creek Farm is as likely to attract history buffs as devotees of superior river sunsets.
Originally built by the Payne family in 1652, the 700-acre property was the site of a house, tobacco fields and a store called Payne’s Ordinary. Two large wharves over deep water allowed barges to come in and pick up tobacco for transport to England. The original house burnt in the late 19th century and was rebuilt around 1900 using the original banisters, fireplace surround and some of the original floors.
Today, that house is situated on nearly five acres with 325' of frontage on the Rappahannock River that daily delivers wide-open water views and spectacular sunsets. “This house has so much personality,” says Sandra Hargett, the owner/broker of Coldwell Banker Chesapeake Bay Properties in Kilmarnock. "And, it's move-in ready. The furnishings can be included with a few exceptions.”
With impressive landscaping, a driveway lined with established crepe myrtles and a sweeping lawn that ends at the river’s edge, the historic house sits as the jewel in the property’s crown. “It’s got loads of charm with all the modern conveniences,” Hargett says. A true Southern river cottage, the property boasts a hillside swimming pool, an expansive screened porch and an updated cottage that oozes charm with a wood-burning fireplace, a renovated kitchen and a dining area overlooking the river.
“The owners’ family has always gathered here for the summer,” she says. “Their grandchildren grew up coming here every year, and that was special.” Children tend to gravitate to the old two-story red barn for adventure-filled afternoons while for decades, local fishermen used the barn as a landmark. “I've always heard that some of the best fishing around is near here,” Hargett says. “Even now, people still look for that barn when they go fishing.”
Between the historic house, sunsets and outstanding fishing, Hargett says, “This is a place to make memories.”
