The annual event honors a deserving member of the local community with a free kitchen makeover, with Prestige Cabinets and its partners donating all design, labor and materials to create the winner’s dream kitchen.
As a thank-you for the dedication and hard work of educators amid the ongoing pandemic, K-12 schoolteachers from Williamsburg and James City County were eligible. Prestige Cabinets used Facebook to direct people to their website to vote for their favorite local teacher and explain why they were deserving of a kitchen makeover. By the end of July, 150 nominations had been received. “We made our decision the first of August based on who received the most single nominations,” says Doug Hogue, owner of Prestige Cabinets. “That was MeLaina Mincher.”
To make Mincher’s dream kitchen a reality, many local vendors had to come together. Prestige Cabinets provided all the new custom cabinetry and demolition, carpentry and painting services. Kathryn Salyer Design and Renovation donated the interior design and selection services and Signature Stone donated new quartz countertops. Brunk Tile donated the tile backsplash materials, and Oyster Point Tile provided the labor to install them. Grimsley Custom Plumbing executed the plumbing services required and Ferguson Enterprises supplied appliance and plumbing fixtures.
“MeLaina, in collaboration with designer Kathryn Salyer, really wanted this kitchen to be something different than current market trends,” Hogue explains. “All selections including cabinetry color, backsplash materials and flooring were ‘out of the box’ choices and really made the project something special for MeLaina and her family.”
The three-month project faced challenges dealing with post-COVID strains on staffing, subcontractor and material availability. “Our biggest satisfaction was in how our local contractor community came together to reward MeLaina for all of the many years and relationships she had given to the local school system and community.”
As for Mincher’s reaction to her completely remodeled kitchen, for a change the teacher was not the one doing the talking. “She was speechless,” Hogue recalls.
