Wine is the most civilized thing in the world, according to Ernest Hemingway.
In Virginia, which ranks fifth in the U.S. in terms of vineyard acreage and grape production, it’s not only civilized, but a booming industry. With 274 wine producers and 578 acres of vineyards, Virginia’s wine industry generates close to $6.41 billion in total economic activity.
Numbers tell the story. More than 25,000 people are directly employed by the Virginia wine industry, but with suppliers and ancillary industries that supply goods and services to the industry, ultimately 45,079 jobs are supported by the wine industry. Occupations as varied as farming, banking, accounting, manufacturing, packaging, transportation, printing and advertising all count on the wine industry for their livelihoods.
Virginia really is for wine lovers, attracting 1.45 million visitors to its wine regions and generating nearly $493 million in local tourism spending. That is reason enough to raise a wine glass and toast the entire wine industry.
Locally, the region benefits from the wineries located along the Virginia Peninsula Wine Trail and the Chesapeake Bay Wine Trail. The Virginia Peninsula Wine Trail sits in an Atlantic coastal plain area with topography and climate reminiscent of European wine-producing regions, while the Chesapeake Bay Wine Trail encompasses the wineries of the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula.
Whether winery hopping or making one winery a destination, guests can count on scenic views, a variety of wines for sipping and a unique Virginia experience.
