The Born Here Burger
Topped with classic American cheese, tomato, red onion, and Rivah Sauce. Served at the Northern Neck Burger Company in Kilmarnock.
Mesquite-grilled gourmet burgers were the game changer. Despite it being off-season, Northern Neck Burger Company in Kilmarnock opened on December 4 with over 1,000 likes on Facebook and enough buzz to get locals jazzed and in the doors.
On a shoestring budget, using local businesses for everything from flooring to plumbing to signage, owner Jay Wolfson created a restaurant with a modern feel, casual vibe and large picnic tables shared by strangers for a community-style dining experience.
“Opening in winter gave us an opportunity to bond with the locals and create community,” Wolfson says. “And it allows us to get our systems in place before the crowds come.”
The classic Born Here burger is the top seller, but regulars gravitate to the Blue burger with blue cheese, mixed greens, balsamic vinaigrette, and onion marmalade, made from scratch, daily, by wife Diana.
With weekly sing-a-longs and a slogan of, “Born here, come here, eat here,” Wolfson seems assured of meeting his goal. “We want to represent with a sense of pride and passion so everyone feels like this place belongs on the Northern Neck.”
Northern Neck Burger Company, 62 Irvington Road, Kilmarnock. Open 7 days, 11:00 am –10:00 pm. Sing-a-longs Fridays and Saturdays, 7:00 pm.
