After 15 years in sales and marketing, Colonial Beach native Terri Crowder longed to return to her entrepreneurial roots. Her great-grandmother, grandmother and aunt all operated their own businesses. She has fond childhood memories of working at her grandmother’s Millie’s Snow Balls on the beach boardwalk.
Terri was determined to find the perfect spot for her handcrafted gourmet popcorn business. Nothing fit the bill in Richmond or Northern Virginia.
Terri and husband Kevin live inFredericksburg and Ophelia. One summer day in 2016, they had lunch at Kilmarnock’s NN Burger and everything clicked. As Terri puts it “Kilmarnock just felt right, a small friendly community that reminds me of home. When something is a perfect fit, you know it.”
The Northern Neck Popcorn Bag opened November 2016 at 50 Irvington Road. With over 50 flavors of gourmet popcorn in savory, candy, and specialty flavors, the treats on display are eye-popping and delicious. The positive response was immediate. After a month in business, Terri was proud to say “we were slammed at Christmas” and thrilled with the “incredibly supportive and easy-going business community.”
All popcorn and flavors are made in-house. The shop is a draw for after-school kids, families, boaters and seasonal residents. With free sample cups, it is a fun destination to relax in a friendly down-home atmosphere. Terri has a thriving online business and supplies local non-profits, schools, showers, fundraisers and businesses with gift baskets, party favors and promotional items. You can order special flavors and colors to fit any occasion.
Best sellers are Buttery White Cheddar and Salted Dark Caramel Chocolate, but choices abound: Apple Pie, Frito Chili, Toasted Coconut Caramel, Salt N’Vinegar, and Cinnamon Roll to name a few. And Terri has created localspecialties—Rivah Mix and Gingerale NN Style. This summer she will unveil an ice cream flavored line. Proud owners Terri and Kevin are open seven days a week, so don’t miss your gourmet treat!
