Dr. Virginia Wells riding the Capital Trail.
Dr. Virginia Wells spends most of her days caring for patients as medical director and staff physician at the College of William & Mary’s Student Health Center. On her days off, she enjoys taking care of herself, both body and soul, by staying fit and listening to music. Here’s what her perfect day looks like in Williamsburg.
MORNING FITNESS
“I’d start my day off with an early morning bike ride along the Virginia Capital Trail,” said Wells, a native of Houston, Texas who has called Williamsburg home since 1992. She’s been with the College for a dozen years.
After taking in the scenery along the trail, Wells would head over to Williamsburg Golf Club for a round of golf. Wells had been an active tennis player much of her life until her late son, Trevor Times, taught her how to play golf.
“I thought if I wanted to hang out with him, I’d better learn to play,” recalled Wells, who started golfing when she was 40 years old. “I love to play golf and I play every day if I can. Williamsburg Golf Club has a great course and I have a great group of golfing buddies there.”
TIME FOR NATURE
Working on the campus of William and Mary has some perks.
“I am pretty busy, but I do like to go and sit in the Sunken Garden when I need a break,” she said. “Sometimes I will just take a walk on campus. We have a beautiful campus. I really like Williamsburg because of its uniqueness and beauty.”
DINNER, DRINKS AND LIVE ENTERTAINMENT
After 18 holes of golf, Wells would make her way over to her favorite restaurant, Cochon on 2nd, for cocktails and food. “Anyone who knows me knows that’s where I like to be,” Wells said. “It’s my favorite hot spot. It’s just a great restaurant. I like to sit at the bar and have drinks with my friends. Le Yaca would also be a nice place to go for dinner after a round of golf.”
Later in the evening, Wells would venture over to Cogan’s Deli & Sports Pub in New Town to listen to live music. Cogan’s features musical entertainment Friday and Saturday nights. Wells especially enjoys listening to The Michael Clark Band and Jacob Vanko Band.
“It’s an incredible place,” she said. “My father gave me an appreciation for music. I grew up listening to great classical jazz musicians. I listen to music all the time. I like to say music is my therapy.”
If this perfect day happened to fall on the second Sunday of the month, she’d be at the 2nd Sundays Arts & Music Festival each month, which she rarely misses.
“I really look forward to 2nd Sundays,” she said. “It’s the cultural aspects of Williamsburg that keeps me here.”
