She entered the 2016 Ms. Virginia Senior America pageant—and won.
Later that year, she represented Virginia at the Ms. Senior America pageant in Atlantic City. She placed among the top 15 finalists from the US.
The Ms. Senior America pageant honors women, ages 60 and over, who best exemplify the dignity, maturity and inner beauty of an older woman. Most of the contestants are grandmothers; some are great-grandmothers. Contestants are judged on their talent performances, a private interview with the five judges, an evening gown competition and presentation of their philosophy of life—in 35 seconds or less!
Throughout it all—rehearsals, costume changes, dinner dances, alumni events and the three-day public competition—she held her own: grace under pressure in very high heels. And she loved every minute of it!
Late 2018, she did it again, this time entering the Ms. Super Senior Virginia USA, open to women 75 years and up. January 2019, she was crowned Ms. Super Senior Virginia USA. Five months later, she competed in glitzy Las Vegas in the Ms. Super Senior USA and was crowned second runner-up in the nation.
“What bothers most women is the talent portion of the competition. I was a professional actress for 20 years, including acting with the Helen Hayes Repertory Theatre on Broadway. I didn’t find it daunting at all—and I love to dress up.”
Her talent—Shakespeare with a twist—performed at Saxe Theatre at Planet Hollywood, was a portrayal of Portia, pleading to Brutus, and a routine of her so-called alter ego, Modine Gunch from Scratch Ankle Falls, Georgia.
As to the future, Nunn admits her husband is “pageanted out for now,” but she will continue attending events across the country, including modeling at New York Fashion Week and a visit to the White House, living and breathing her winning mantra; “I’ve lived through painful times. I’ve cried. I’ve screamed, but I’ve wiped my tears, squared my shoulders, and carried on in this festival called life, mindful that the stars can’t shine without the darkness. At journey’s end, I want to have done my best, so I can say one last time, ‘so far, so good!’”
