Is there anything more southern in the summer than iced tea or more fitting for this water-loving region than fresh caught tuna prepared to perfection by a leading culinary team?
That’s what Tuna & Tea for CHKD brings together thanks to five local businesses presenting a special fundraiser this month to raise $10,000 for the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters (CHKD).
Now through July 29, visit Waypoint Seafood & Grill in off of Route 199, near Kingsmill, to order the signature Tuna & Tea appetizer and cocktail for $20. Proceeds benefit CHKD.
The event is presented in partnership with Northwestern Mutual Advisors, Tracy Shackelford and Harold Philipsen, Consociate Media, Sara Harris Photography and Marker Nine.
People who want to support but are unable to make it to Waypoint are encourage to donate to the cause online through Marker Nine here.
Every donation made to CHKD makes a direct impact on the hospital’s ability to care for young patients every day, allowing them to provide the best quality health care for children throughout the community. Specifically, support to CHKD helps fund medical supplies and equipment, fund pediatric medical research, allow for children suffering from life-threatening illnesses to participate in clinical trials, purchase surgical gloves, IV poles and hospital beds for the more than 5,000 overnight patients admissions at CHKD each year and support specialized health programs.
This fundraiser was specifically inspired by CHKD’s impact on pediatric cancer patients, with organizing business owners knowing or having direct relationships with patients who have benefitted from the CHKD cancer services.
“My 18-year-old niece was diagnosed with Hodgkins Disease the Tuesday before Thanksgiving last year,” said Tracy Shackelford of Northwestern. “Not the Thanksgiving any family would want as she went from a healthy college freshman to cancer patient overnight, with the start of chemo the Monday after Thanksgiving.”
Seven months later, Shackelford says her family remains incredibly thankful for the care and treatment she received at CHKD in Norfolk.
“It’s hard to imagine anything but heartbreak and heartache in a cancer center, but the folks at CHKD have created a place with state-of-the-art treatment AND state-of-the-art care,” said Shackelford.
Waypoint Seafood & Grill is located at 1480 Quarterpath Road in Williamsburg.
