Each fall for the past few years, you may have spotted artists set up on the street, or in a field, capturing our beautiful and inspiring local scenery in paint or pastel at TAG’s Tidelands Plein Air Festival.
This year, TAG wants to bring more artists into the plein air family, so they are expanding their educational programs to teach some of the skills needed to paint in nature.
On March 28th, 29th, and 30th, noted local plein air painter Cate Kauffman will lead a two-day introductory workshop on the skills and practices of plein air painting. The optional third day will be for plein air painting with your new skills. $200 for two days, optional third day free. The workshop will take place at Rappahannock River Valley National Wildlife Refuge at Cat Point Creek. Register at https://tapparts.org/2025/02/14/intro-to-plein-air-painting-with-cate-kauffman/.
On May 10th, TAG Guild Member Nathan Pope will offer an introduction to pastels, which can often be used in plein air work. This workshop will take place at TAG, and will be $30. Register at https://tapparts.org/2025/03/09/05-10-25-intro-to-painting-landscapes-with-pastels-with-nathan-pope/.
On May 17th, TAG will host a one-day “Paint Out” - an event for all plein air artists, new and experienced, to gather together at a local landmark to paint together and learn from one another.
On July 1st, registration opens for artists to participate in the Tidelands Plein Air Festival, TAG’s annual event, this year October 22-25, bringing in artists from all over the country to paint in our gorgeous county.
Register for all of these workshops on TAG’s website tapparts.org.
