Amidst all the holiday preparations, getting yourself ready might be the last thing on your mind. But it can really put you in a festive mood to get sparkly.
Here are some tips from local experts at Posh Salon and the Scotland Street Salon to help you get ready to party this winter.
Up to You Updos
Nadia Duncan, the owner of Posh Salon, said that their location in Monticello Marketplace stays open late on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve to help people get primped for their holiday events.
“Because we’re an Aveda salon, we have all naturally based products, not so high fashion but still lots of sparkle and shine for people to treat themselves to,” she said. Duncan suggested that for this season glossing treatments, in shades of red such as cherry and cranberry, would add some seasonal spark.
One of her tips is to bring in ideas of hairstyles as inspiration, and a picture of what you plan to wear for your special event.
“Find inspiration to share with your stylist, but don’t be married to it. We’ll help you work with your age, hair type and length to see how we can make it work,” she said. Duncan mentioned that your outfit may offer some inspiration or rule out some options, like a dress with an asymmetrical cut or sequins.
Jordan Rector, a stylist at Scotland Street Salon, said that coming in to try a few options can help lessen the stress the day of the event.
“You can describe what you are looking for, and we can make some recommendations. A lot of people forget that you don’t have to come in for a haircut or color, you can also book time to just get your hair styled, or beautifully blown out by a professional,” she said.
One trend that the Scotland Street Salon stylists noticed is the desire for fun “fashion colors” not found in nature.
“People love to try a temporary color, particularly for the holiday season, just to be festive,” Irina Lemeza, a receptionist at Scotland Street said. “People also like to have their hair look good while they do all their holiday errands.”
Don’t Make it Up: Learn from the Experts
“Getting your hair done at the salon can be less frustrating, we have the tools, the different products and the experience to make the look last longer,” said Duncan.
Another area where the professionals have an edge: education. To add to your look, you may want to learn some beauty tips.
Brow expert Elizabeth Hept at Posh Salon does make-up lessons and pre-events. Some people want to learn, others just want it done for them. “We have advice for winter weather as well as special events. We can help you decide which features to emphasize and how to photograph well,” she said.
Most salons offer more than just hair services, so if you want to try a new beauty skill, like cat eye liner or sparkly lips, you may want to get some tips first.
Prep for Perfection
Many salons are very busy during the holidays and book up quickly.
“Call as soon as you know you have an event to attend,” said Ashleigh Cook at Posh Salon.
Lemenza also emphasizes the getting “on the books” as soon as you can. It’s a busy time for lots of people, but in particular salons helping people with their personal holiday sparkle.
