Part of the reason for that is Randall Kipp Architecture, a full-service architectural firm located in Irvington for the past 23 years. Although the firm works with clients from as far away as New York City, Chicago and even Europe, a good share of the projects they build are situated on the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula.
That’s because so many people are interested in building on a creek, river or the Bay. Most of them have lived in a traditional colonial box with a quaint backyard and garden, he says, and by the time they’re ready to retire, or at least thinking about it, their sights are set on an expansive property with water views.
“We help them build a house with an open floor plan that works with their lives and celebrates the views,” Kipp says. His eight-person architectural practice accomplishes that with extensive discussions with the client to determine which particular elements of their lives–travel, books, entertaining– need to be considered in planning.
A big part of the process is the need to respect the property where the house will sit. “We never want the house to dominate the site,” he says. “We sculpt the architecture to take advantage of all that’s involved with the site and
that includes the established trees, the prevailing winds, the solar orientation and, of course, the water views. They’re all part and parcel of our design process.”
And the house isn’t the only focus: They create spaces within and around to complement it. Kipp’s staff includes interior designers who are able to assist clients with furnishings and lighting design. He makes it a practice to frequently collaborate with landscape architects to enhance the natural surroundings of the properties. The architects and designers are present every step of the way, designing through construction to ensure that quality is achieved and the client satisfied.
Vision and collaboration allow Kipp Architecture to deliver the entire package.
